May I ask some questions about the Turing Machine that comes with this website?
The answer is YES!!!
You will get that chance after you download the Excel file from the HOME page by clicking on the picture, and then double-clicking on the file you downloaded. Once you start building your Turing Machine, then at almost every step of the process you will have the option of clicking on the FAQ's to ask a question specific to that step (and even some general questions about Turing Machines, if you wish). You will also have the option of viewing a video that will show you how you can complete that step and proceed to the next.
To see how that works before you try it yourself for the first time, you may want to view the Demo Video which you can watch by clicking on that link at the top of this screen.
If you click on the Demo Video link at the top of the screen, you can see a presentation of the building and running of a Turing Machine from the book “The Emperor’s New Mind.” It is Sir Roger Penrose’s simplest example, and the data used with this Turing Machine is the same as what Penrose used in his book as well.
Below are several more examples, which you can just watch as videos, in case you wanted see some additional demonstrations before you actually try to build and run a Turing Machine of your own.
Some of the videos below (those with yellow backgrounds) are not really demonstrations of the building and running of Turing Machines, but rather presentations of how you can save certain Excel Files to your desktop. They will then be used by the video examples below them.
Apology: All of the videos below were recorded using an older laptop running Windows 10. When that laptop stopped working, I bought a new laptop running Windows 11 and also purchased the latest version of Microsoft Office. I was very disappointed to find out that what I now saw on my new laptop did not exactly match the videos. I seriously considered redoing all the videos.
However, the differences were only in the demonstrations of the downloading, opening, closing, and saving of files. (For example, the videos show that when I close an Excel file then I also have the option of either saving the changes or not. This no longer happened.) I felt that anyone viewing these videos already knows how to perform these tasks according to the versions of the software they have on their computers. Those portions of the videos--which are really the whole purpose of their existence, and which are really the reason you may want to view them--did not change.
Therefore, I changed my mind, and decided to write this Apology, rather than redo all the videos just to have them become obsolete again in a couple of years.
